Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (referred to as ‘KONGSBERG’) has agreed with Avinor to provide Kongsberg Digital Towers to seven more airports in Norway.

The installations comprise sensors and other technical infrastructure that enable the remote operation of air traffic tower service from Avinor’s operations centre in Bodø, located in northern Norway.

The seven newly established airports include Båtsfjord, Vadsø, Sørkjosen, Sandane, Mosjøen, Ørsta Volda, and the recently constructed airfield in Mo i Rana. These will become operational starting in 2027. In addition, the deal encompasses the inclusion of a new airport installation, specifically the Bodø Airport, which is scheduled to commence operations in 2029.

The Remote Towers Center in Bodø presently manages 11 towers situated at various airports throughout Norway through remote control. By March 2025, a total of 15 towers will be commissioned, marking the completion of the first phase of the Remote Towers (RT) initiative.

The RT program holds significant strategic importance for Avinor. In a press release, Avinor stated that the board of directors has decided to expand the RT Program by adding seven new towers due to the highly positive experiences with the remote-controlled operation.

In 2015, Avinor and KONGSBERG formed a partnership to create remote-controlled tower solutions specifically designed for regional airports in Norway. Avior’s Remote Tower Center in Bodø is expected to have a total of 21 operational towers by 2027.
